HISTORY OF Mega Millions

Mega Millions (initially called The Big Game Mega Millions as the successor of The Big Game) is an American game. The first (The Big Game) Mega Millions draw occurred in 2002.

Reflecting common practice among American lotteries, the jackpot is advertised as a nominal value of annual instalments. A cash value option (the usual preference), when chosen by a jackpot winner, pays the approximate present value of the jackpot. Since the 18th October 2013, Mega Millions uses a 5/70 (for the white balls) plus 1/25 (for the "MegaBall") double matrix to select its winning numbers.

The 17th December 2013 draw with the current 5/70 + 1/25 format produced its first two jackpot winners, potentially sharing a jackpot worth $648 million (annuity value; with a cash option of $347,639,485), which is the second highest jackpot in Mega Millions and American history.

The largest jackpot in Mega Millions, as well as in American lottery history, was a $656 million annuity value (with a cash option of $474 million) for the 30th March 2012 draw, in which there were three jackpot-winning tickets. All three tickets had been claimed by the 18th April 2012, with each set of winners choosing the cash option of $158 million, a one-third share. The largest Mega Millions prize was a $319 million (annuity) for the lone winning ticket of the 25th March 2011 draw.

Previous Winners

The Mega Millions is responsible for awarding the biggest jackpot in lottery history. In March 2012, the jackpot stood at $656 million. Three lucky winners from Illinois, Kansas and Maryland shared the jackpot, each opting to take the cash option equaling $158 million. In April 2014 a couple from Florida, Raymond Moyer and Robyn Collier, won $207 million, half of the Mega Millions jackpot. Just two years previously, Collier had filed for bankruptcy with just $4.73 to her name, and a few months before she bought the winning ticket from a gas station her boyfriend Raymond Moyer had been made redundant. The jackpot win couldn’t have come at a better time! Whilst it’s typical for the Mega Millions jackpot to be shared between more than one ticket holder, on November 4th 2014, a lottery player from New York scooped the entire $326 million prize money. The jackpot had rolled over since August 22nd, and a flurry of increased ticket purchases finally led to the record breaking single prize win. On 22nd August 2014, Rick Knudsen won $180 million on the Mega Millions. The 53 year old told the press he only ever buys a handful of lottery tickets a year, and only when he’s feeling lucky. In the run up to his jackpot win, the numbers fanatic noticed some unusual activity. Every time he bought something in a shop, the total would be exact, without any change. This happened seven times consecutively. Then he met his family at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, and won on seven different machines. When it was announced on the news the following morning that the jackpot winner was from his hometown, Calimesa, Knudsen checked his ticket and came forward as the winner!

The Draw

The Mega Millions uses two drawing machines, known as Criterion II, to select the winning numbers. Each machine rotates the balls using counter-rotating arms until the balls drop through the hole at the bottom. The first machine contains numbers 1 to 75, of which five white balls will drop through the hole as part of the winning combination. The second machine contains the Mega Ball numbers of 1-15, one golden ball will be randomly selected from this to form the final number of the jackpot combination.
